our story

About Agnieszka

My name is Agnieszka, and I am the owner, manager, and head seamstress at Rare Bird Sewing Studio.

I developed a passion for sewing as a teenager, making clothes for myself, and experimenting.

I grew up in Poland in the late 80’s where access to the fashion world was limited.

I was creative with clothing repairs and alterations.

My Mum was a “village seamstress” – I grew up with the sound of the sewing machine in the next room.

She shared her knowledge with me, and was my first and most valued teacher.

I stay active all the time. My hobbies outside the sewing are jewellery making and knitting.

I love to spend my free time in nature, walking with my dog, hiking in the Scottish hills, and going camping.

I love to travel. For the past few years, I’ve been a keen biker. I ride a Suzuki Gladius 600cc.

Together with my partner, we love short and long motorbike trips around Scotland, and when the time is right, to Europe.

I moved to Edinburgh in 2010 to further pursue my career, and continue to learn crucial skills within the sewing profession.

During twelve years of personal development, I’ve worked alongside the best Edinburgh Kilt-makers and crafters.

In 2017 I completed a 12 week course and obtained a Scottish Qualification certificate in Traditional Kilt-making.

I have made many Kilts since then, but I am focused on developing Vegan Kilts made of alternative fabrics.

My desire for creativity and growth led me to pursue my own path as a self-employed sewing machinist/seamstress.

It gave me the opportunity to be involved in many different projects and collaborations.

Along the path, I became vegan and started to learn about sustainability and eco-friendly approaches.

I wanted to incorporate my personal values into my work.

My small sewing studio is a Vegan-friendly space that stands firmly in opposition to Fast Fashion.

· REPURPOSE · REDUCE · REUSE · RECYCLE ·

My focus is on Sustainability: I source environmentally friendly textiles and I hope to encourage more customers to choose linen and hemp fabrics for their projects.

I offer a made-to-measure service to avoid overproduction.

Alteration and clothing repair is the best way to extend the lifetime of garments and reduce waste.

My sewing studio is fully equipped with industrial sewing machines to achieve the best possible quality.

I develop products that are beautiful and made from repurposed denim, end-of-roll fabrics, and offcuts.

This approach requires thinking outside the box and using the beautiful resources that are already available to us.

Patchworks and garments made of small pieces of fabric carefully sewn together are absolutely unique, and one-of-a-kind.

In a world of mass production, I am happy to offer distinctive, sometimes quirky products not available anywhere else.

Slow Fashion

There is a great need for the introduction of new values in our society, where bigger is not necessarily better, where slower can be faster, and where less can be more.

– Gaylord Nelson

Be the change you wish to see in the world.

– Mahatma Gandhi

We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.

– Howard Zinn

Buy less, choose well, and make it last.

– Vivienne Westwood
